Although Ryan’s birthday was on Sunday, we celebrated mostly on Saturday. The day was filled with the family – exploring parts of the city we’ve never seen. And then once the kids were tucked in bed, I surprised him with this drive-in movie in our backyard!
If you follow us on instagram, you might remember the paint project I was working on. Yeah… it was this bad boy of a movie marquee I was prepping. Thankfully I had some help from a friend/handyman to finish it. Things could’ve gotten REAL fugly with my attempts to use a drill.
His gift was a quilt (hiding under the concession bucket) – an old quilt topper (1930’s mens pajama scraps) I found in an antique store awhile back that I had finished. Years from now, wrapped up in the blanket, I hope he’ll reminisce on this birthday we shared together.
I count my lucky stars to have you forever, Babe.
Love you!
Oh my gosh, what a fabulous idea! I have been wanting to go to the drivein for a while! I couldn’t drive our car into the back yard though, and I’m not sure if I would want to do this in the front. What a creative birthday gift though!
What a seriously fun date idea!!! Love all of your cute snacks and little touches.

I love reading your blog! I am constantly trying to find a fun date night but can’t spend a lot of money…this is so romantic and classic..I LOVE IT!
this is SUCH a sweet idea. Well done, well played and well executed. I bet your hubby was floored!
*** I would love to know your instagram handle!
Thank you so much, Kelly!
Instagram handle is: @xoPinkPistachio
If that is not the sweetest birthday surprise I don’t know what is!!! A handmade quilt AND setting up your own “drive in” theatre….you are seriously Super Wife!!
This is such a sweet idea for a birthday celebration. I’m sure it took a lot of work and your hubby totally appreciated that. Plus it made for some memorable pics! Great job on the Movie Marquee too!
How stinking cute are you!? What a fabulous idea. How did you project the movie? We have no drive ins near by and I know my hubby would just LOVE this!
It’s just a projector hooked up to a DVD machine and a hung table cloth. I rented the system from ATS rentals (shows right up at your door and you return at a UPS center). Easy!
This is just the cutest idea I have seen in a long time! What a perfect date night. I absolutely love the movie marquee. Fancy little thing. Now I feel like making one, do you happen to have a tutorial on how you did it?
Kicking myself in the face I didn’t do step by step picture instructions… but maybe I could do a post explaining it?
You’re terrific. I appreciate how your blog is adorable with a twist of real. You were born to be cute and share cute-ness with the world and you do it well.
The same wind blows on us all and our canvas isn’t always painted with the most beautiful colors. I appreciate you for rising above the ‘stuff’ to share a sweet, simple, beautiful way of living.
One of the most touching comments I’ve ever received. Thank you kindly, Jen.
Awesome idea!!! You are so creative! My goal is to be just like you! 🙂
That is amazing!! I think he is the lucky one!! I love the movie board.. absolutely awesome!
WOW! You knocked it out of the park with this one Missy. Such a cute idea and your styling is just gorgeous. I think I may just steal this idea for my husband’s next birthday 🙂

Hmmm we have a sedan but surely I could do a family movie night like this with blow up mattresses, or the trampoline plus loads of blankets and big pillows. Are you using a projector? Beautiful. Any tips on what to get my hubby for our second wedding anniversary- cotton? You are so amazing at creative ideas!
A trampoline would be an awesome idea! Yes, it’s a projector from ATS rentals!
How about a cotton quilt?! Wink wink.
Missy, you made your hubs a quilt?! That is awesome and so crafty! I love the DIY drive in idea, so creative!
