After so many hours indoors playing in the tent, it was time to get outside. Day 2 of ‘Kids Camp Staycation‘ was spent making homemade chalk! Just like most things homemade – there’s a noticeable difference in quality. The pigment is rich and vibrant; and it’s softer to draw with. Yes, it’s messy… but the mess is half the fun!
The boys would differ that the real fun was racing cars like those that can wagered on w88!
- You Will Need:
- plastic cups, popsicle sticks, cardboard rolls (I used a wrapping paper barrel cut into equal pieces, wax paper (4×4 inch squares), duct tape, crayola washable paint, plaster of paris, water, kraft or newspaper for covering your work surface
- Directions:
- Repurpose cardboard tubes (toilet paper, paper towels, wrapping paper etc) to act as molds. Seal one end of each tube securely with duct tape. Line the tube with waxed paper and fix with tape at the opening (so it doesn’t move when plaster is poured). combine 1 tablespoon paint with 1/4 cup cold water. add approximately 1/3 cup + 1 Tablespoon plaster and mix with popsicle stick until thoroughly combined. if too thick, add 1 teaspoon of water at a time until the consistency is just slightly smooth (be careful not to add too much water or the chalk will not set). pour chalk into tube, lightly tapping to remove air bubbles. scrape off the top until smooth. let set for 1 hour. tube will become saturated and soft from the water (don’t worry, it makes it easier when removing). lightly squeeze the tube on the sides to check if chalk is set. if hard, carefully peel away the cardboard, wax paper, and tape. let chalk rest on a wire rack overnight or until dry (may take several days depending climate).

This would be such a fun little DIY project with your little ones! Cute post 🙂
Xo,
Sincerely Miss Ash
aww what a great idea 🙂 never knew it was that easy to make sidewalk chalk 🙂 thanks for sharing!! xoxo
Awesome idea!! We are all about chalk at our house. Monday my little guys tried hopscotch (self initiated) and it was hilarious. The whole jumping on one foot thing needs some work. We love making roads (or cities) as well – they set up boxes as building (I think you did a post on something similar in the past), and now have started pulling sand out to create a beach, which of course means you have to add water (as long as the beach isn’t too close to the city 🙂 ). My boys will go nuts if I tell them we can actually make our chalk too – thanks for sharing!!
This is amazing 🙂 I can’t wait to try it out! Thanks for sharing! Love + Shine CourtStar
