The birthplace of pizza. Too bad we almost missed our ship trying to taste it for ourselves (and boy was it worth it). You see, we went to stunning cliffside villages along what’s known as the amalfi coast: positano and sorrento and also visited the ancient civilization of Pompeii.
There’s no way any picture out there captures its beauty. Think of the hawaiian coast on steroids with rainbow colored houses replacing cabanas and the smell of lemons replacing pineapples.
The village of Positano is one windy street that starts at the top of a hill and weaves its way through shops, cafe’s, and artist’s prints down to the beach. This was one of our very favorite stops of the day. We couldn’t help but stop for some lemon sorbet and shopping. I was amazed at the clothing found in the Almafi Coast (surprising, I know) but the fabrics and design of each piece were whimsical & feminine. And yes, I bought a dress that’s exactly that! I can’t wait to show you!!
Next stop was Sorrento. Sorrento had a much different feel than Positano, it wasn’t as exclusive but still just as quaint. We walked the streets, ate gelato (a common theme) and made our way to the beach.
It’s one thing to read about Pompeii in the history books (though husby has no recollection of ever learning about it…what school did he go to?) and it’s another to walk its streets envisioning life almost 2,000 years ago. Life here was relatively the same as it is today. They had a central market, grand theaters, and nice homes adorned with beautiful mosaics & frescos. Civilization in 79ad wasn’t as different as I would’ve thought.
I learned that no matter the circumstances (along steep cliffs or next to erupting volcanoes) people still find a way to beautify their surroundings.
Napoli you won’t be forgotten.
I love this vacation, which cruise line did you take?
I’ve only cruised with Princess. They have yet to disappoint so we have yet to try another line. It’s the ultimate vacation & if I did Europe again I’d for sure do a cruise. It was so nice to leave all of our stuff on the ship & not worry about transportation or food. Each night after a long day we’d come back aboard to a beautiful meal. There’s entertainment (movie under the stars) each night & fun ways to relax. I couldn’t recommend it more!
Wow, stunning scenery. I can imagine it’s so much more imposing in real life too.
The colour of that skirt btw is to die for! Where is it from???
The skirt is American Apparel. The scenery really was breathtaking. Winding around on those cliffs and then approaching a new village was just incredible!
Poisitano is, I think, one of the most gorgeous places in Europe – many fond memories from there!
I so love seeing all your vacay pictures – you are brilliant at capturing the mood and beauty of everywhere you travel 🙂
Oh Positano! The charm & whimsy… not to mention lemons! It was one of our favorites! Thank you so much for your kind words. The whole time I kept snapping pictures left and right making sure to capture all that was impressing me! Ha!
As always, cute outfit friend! 🙂 And mmmmm, that gelato looks delish! Makes me jealous!
Husby made it a point to get gelato in each Italian city! ha!
Beautiful! And I love your skirt! So breezy!
That skirt was a godsend… so comfortable with all the walking we did that day! Thank you, darlin! xo
Stunning pictures of amazing destinations. Postiano is on my wishlist of places to go with my hubby! May I ask what type of camera you use? Your pictures are incredible!!
Positano is definitely a place we’d revisit and then hit Capri as well. I have a Nikon D5000 with a 35 mm lens. Thank you for the compliments, friend.
Missy…what kind of camera do you guys have/use? It always seems to take such GREAT pictures!
XOXO
It’s a Nikon D5000 with a 35mm lens. I couldn’t be happier with it. Definitely want to experiment with different lenses but I’m content with this for the time being (seeing as I’m no professional)! ha! Thank you, LuLu!
Almost-hubby doesn’t know it yet but we will have to take a vacation like this!
Would be a great honeymoon spot… wink wink. Kim Kardashian & her husby took theirs here.
I’m so jealous! These photos are gorgeous.
XOXO
Francesca’s Collections
You’ll just have to do a photo session there one day… And maybe I’ll just have to tag along with you! tee hee! Thank you kindly! xo
Awe! I am dying to go back to Italy! I went to Pompeii before too! Isn’t it crazy? That the people were frozen like that! My husband served in Milan on his mission so hopefully we’ll visit for the Rome temple dedication! That is the plan at least…! Looks like you had a blast! And of course trying gelato at every Italian city is so necessary 🙂
LOVE the turquoise skirt. and I cannot believe that picture of the pizza….OMG yum!
Gorgeous! I miss Italy….
I’m so glad you made it to Napoli! That’s where I went to high school and my dad still lives in Cuma!
Dear Melissa & Ryan==So nice you could go to the beautiful country that is Ryan’s heritage!!! Papa and I have been to Italy several times and, we think it is even more beautiful than Hawaii! We go for genealogy, but love the scenery! My family is from Sicily which is near the “toe of the boot”. It is a lovely island too! I guess we have seen every major city in Italy! The people are wonderful too. I am so happy that you could experience it too–Ryan, we like gelato tooLove you lots-
Gram
I adore that aqua American Apparel skirt! What did you wear underneath it?
