Think french toast crossed with an oozy strawberry orange and cream cheese danish (if such a danish exists).
Scrumdidiliumptious, no?
The background behind this recipe was an attempt to “knock-off” of my favorite french toast served at Brio Tuscan Grille. They do a marscapone and strawberry french toast that’s mighty tasty. Obviously, their recipe isn’t public knowledge. After experimenting in my test kitchen, I have to say (in the most humble way I can)… this version is even better! EUREEEEKA!
With additions like orange marmalade to the filling and creme fraiche, fresh orange zest, and nutmeg in the batter – really do set this french toast apart.
If you’re not a fan of mascarpone, strawberries, or orange marmalade… this recipe could easily be altered by not “stuffing” it. Why you wouldn’t want to “stuff” is beyond me. But the batter alone will kick up traditional french toast.
Oh and Brioche. Yes, as crazy as it is to say, it WILL make a difference in the end result. So be sure to find it.
Happy eating!

You don’t need to be humble, this looks incredible! I bet it’s amazing with that orange marmalade and mascarpone. This looks too delicious!
That looks like HEAVEN! Can I ask where you found your brioche? I was looking for it when I made bread pudding and didn’t have any luck?
I’ve found Brioche rather tricky to find. However, I know Whole Foods carries it and more specialty grocers/bakeries.
sounds AMAZING and i will be making this tomorrow for brunch. but question, can I use challah for this or brioche is a must?
Brioche and Challah are similar and would be a good substitute if you can’t find Brioche. However, I’m not sure how it’ll turn out because I haven’t used it. Brioche is a thicker bread that can hold up to this type of batter. If you end up using Challah, you’ll have to let me know how it goes!
I’m gonna try with Challa too. No brioche around here either!
Wow, to say that I’m impressed would be a staggering understatement! This looks so delicious! Thanks for sharing 🙂 I’m also wondering about Brioche. Did you get it at a bakery? We live within range of a lot of fancy grocery stores and I never see it!
Whole Foods carries it. There’s a local bakery here that carries it but didn’t have any when I needed it. I ended up buying a loaf from Brio (the restaurant I tried to replicate). Kind of ironic, dontcha think?! Ha!
OMG yum! This looks amazing!

That looks delicious!!! I have to do this recipe for my kids.
You should run a bed and breakfast!
We’ve talked about having a breakfast restaurant one day (daydreaming of course)… but it IS our favorite meal!
Okay, please tell me which local bakery usually has brioche — I’ve looked for it so many times in the 12 years we’ve lived here, and I have never been able to find it. All the best French toast recipes call for brioche. And where is the closest Whole Foods? You need a bumper sticker on the back of your car that says “FOLLOW ME TO FIND ALL THE COOL STUFF!”
Meanwhile, I need to print this recipe!! Yummy!
Haha! You kill me, Rebecca! Whole Foods unfortunately doesn’t open until the summer. I just know they carry it from shopping with my mom when I’m home. Amelie’s sells it on the weekends only. Can’t wait to hear how your family likes it! xo

MEEEP! This makes me so happy to hear you enjoyed it as much as we did! YAY! You’re so very welcome.
This looks UNbelievable. I love mascarpone and the fruit touches, with both orange and strawberry, sound heavenly! I can’t wait to try this 🙂
I am a new reader and just adore your blog! Made this this morning and it was SUPER yummy!! Thank you for sharing.
Aww, YAY! Happy news on both accounts! xo
We just had a family breakfast and this was the star attraction we had home made apricot marmalade so used that instead and it was scrumptious! Just a note the sugar is not used anywhere in your method. Thankyou for a perfectly delicious way to start my day.
Whoopsie! I’ll go back and fix that. The sugar is added to the egg batter mixture. Glad it was a hit! 🙂
Made this wonderful breakfast this morning for my boys. They loved it. Thanks for the inspiration!
made this with blood orange marmalade. this particular jam was a bit runny, which seemed to make my filling a little too runny. Next time I think I’ll use my favorite apricot jam. It has a thicker jam consistency. Other than that flavor was really yummy!
This looks amazing Missy! I have been looking for goodies for a Meet & Great Baby shower…I this will be part of the ticket! Wow!!!
