What Should I Wear Today?

October 26, 2012

—————————————————

Some of you have asked how I put an outfit together… more or less the thought process of how it all works.

If you care to know my crazy thoughts about clothes, keep reading. If not, I wish you a very happy weekend filled preferrably with s’mores and/or cinnamon rolls!

All the rest of you… here we go.

So by now I’m pretty sure we’ve established the burgundy slash oxblood (which gives me the shivers every time I say it… eeek) pant is trending. In my case, trending is putting it mildly. I’m finding every excuse in the book to pair them with a smorgasbord of tops.

But making it all work can be tricky.

So here’s where we start answering the question to, What should I wear today?

1) Start with one piece you absolutely WANT to use in your look. In my case? The “unmentionable bodily fluid” pant. Check!

2) Now what would work on top? I could do a neutral like a chambray shirt, or gray knit sweater and keep it simple (and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with this by any means).

BUT… I’m in the mood to have a little more fun. So?

3) If the pant is bold, a bold top will balance it out. Oooh, I know! My new Colonel Mustard sweater! And if you happen to be a blonde, then you know mustard yellow can be a VERY baad idea if left alone.

BUT…

4) Add a cute versatile blazer and a neutral print (RAWR to leopard) and now the mustard is understated, see? Check!

5) Shoes. Hmmm… I could do a bootie, which would work. Try it on and it DOES work. But, I need something a little more solid. Enter stage left, neutral knee high boots. Check!

6) Keeping accessories bare minimal (only my ring) because I’ve got a lot going on.

7) Hair? Well, it is dirty. Besides down would be too heavy with all the layering going on, so up it goes with no rhyme or reason.

So there you have it. The quirky thoughts behind what I decide to wear.

Oh and remember, there are no exact rules to this whole thing. Creating a look is an evolving process. Start with one piece and play with it until it feels and looks right to you!

Oh and I almost forgot the most important addition to ANY look…

8) Your smile. Check!

Happy Weekend, Friendlies! xo

Nordstrom calls their red-ish pants “port”, I would much rather describe red pants with a wine vs. the “unmentionable bodily fluid” lol 🙂

I love the mustard color! But I’m right there with you… I can’t style it alone. Must have layer or look too washed out!

Super cute! It’s fun to hear how somebody else goes about putting together an outfit! Surprisingly, I think I do it pretty similiar, starting with one piece that I really want to wear that day and then add pieces around it. ps, i love mustard yellow!

There’s really no rhyme or reason to it. I just twist it up with an elastic. Honestly, it looks different every time I do it. ha!
