Mane Course

September 26, 2012

After being in summer’s blaring sun, our hair could use a little TLC. Especially for us with color treated tresses. And all this time you’ve thought I was a NATURAL blonde? Tee hee.

Healthy hair comes not only from eating healthy foods but also infusing nourishing ingredients from the outside in. Sure, there are products out there you can buy that will put your hair through beauty bootcamp. But nothing beats whipping up something fresh and raw from your own fridge. And no, we’re not talking last night’s take-out chinese. Don’t even go there. Ew.

Now, let’s delve into the world of hair care with a twist of innovation and wellness. While we’re familiar with the power of nourishing ingredients, there’s one emerging star that deserves our attention: CBD. Yes, you heard it right! CBD, short for cannabidiol, isn’t just for relaxation and skincare. Its medicinal properties have also found their way into hair products. Imagine treating your tresses to the soothing benefits of CBD, derived from the hemp plant. Whether it’s CBD-infused shampoos, conditioners, or even cbd sweets to indulge in, this versatile ingredient has made its mark on the beauty scene, offering a natural and holistic approach to hair care. So, as we explore the art of hair care, let’s not forget the innovative potential of CBD and how it can revolutionize our locks, one strand at a time.

Now that we’ve got that clear. Lets talk hair. Yes, yet ANOTHER hair post (which more than likely means excessive explanations… but there’s art behind all this stuff, ladies… and YOUR locks are my canvas).

Why these Ingredients? Do you care? Probably not. But I care to sleep better tonight knowing you know why.

EGGS – super high in protein to strengthen and add shine. The fatty acids in the yolk add moisture. Taking protein powders is also one of the best sources of protein and an exceptional way to boost metabolism.

SPINACH– may I remind you of Pop-eye’s message? Eat the green stuff to get strong. Same goes for your do. Pump some iron. It adds strength, volume, and thickness.

STRAWBERRIES – contain a mild acid that will help remove product buildup. the seeds will help exfoliate your scalp. oooh-oooh! We just got a bogo with this ingredient! bam!

AVOCADO – fat… oh my word I said it. sorry, it just slipped. as women, we hate that word. well, learn to love it, my friendlies because in this case it’ll rehydrate and repair damage. if only this magical fruit could repair the damage on the derriere.

HONEY – not, your boytoy. Although, I’m sure he’s super sweet. I mean honey, as in the awesome antioxidant and humectant (which also locks in moisture). plus it tastes good incase some dribbles down your face and you decide to lick it. what? no. pretend I didn’t just say that. Ok so maybe I did taste it…

BANANA – because Dr. Oz said so. And I trust him. A long time ago I remember him saying if there’s one thing to put on your hair to repair it, it’s bananas. So into the mix it goes!

PLAIN YOGURT – creates luxurious shine that’ll make you want to post a video on youtube of doing the infamous hair flick. yes, you might just become Tresemme’s next big hair model. yogurt also tames dandruff (no one likes snow unless its falling from the sky not your scalp).

ONE. Shampoo your hair and rinse with hot water (opens up hair follicle to better absorb the smoothie). Remove excess water and gently wring out the ends using your hands. Blot ends dry with a towel. Don’t rub your hair like you would a mangy dog. You mean to tell me, you already forgot? Nice. I taught you about it HERE, remember? Kay, back to business. Flip your hair upside down and brush through. Remove any additional water by wringing and blotting.

TWO. (prior to washing) Whip up you hair smoothie by combining all above ingredients in a blender until completely smooth. The smoothie I’m drinking is NOT the gunk I’m about to moosh into my hair. I just decided after the whole thing was done my whistle needed a good refreshment too! With your hair still upside down, use the entire smoothie and massage into hair, scalp, and ends. REALLY get into it. Like, as if your hair’s life depended upon it (because it kinda does, lets be honest). Twist your hair up on top of your head and use a clip to keep it in place. Might I suggest a shower cap if you plan to do this out of the shower. Better yet, do this treatment while taking a looong relaxing bath. Let smoothie set for 15-30 minutes.

TWO & A HALF. Wash out the smoothie with shampoo using warm water. Apply conditioner. Rinse with cold water (to reseal hair follicle). Again, brush out your hair and remove excess water (remembering no shaggy-dog-towel-rubbing action).

THREE. Blow dry. Best to re-read THIS post. Cliff Notes version? Dry upside down on warm high heat. No brushing. Once completely dry seal with cold air. Be prepared to experience va-va-voom like you’ve never experienced before! I’ve NEVER seen my hair quite THIS big in my life. 80’s rock concert? Jessie from Saved by the Bell? Same diff. Both are out of control HUGE!

FOUR. Tame the wildness. Style as you normally would (in this case I straightened following THIS technique). And be prepared to experience your hair transformation. There’s no other word to quite describe it other than beautifully healthy. My hair hasn’t felt like this EVER. Can not wait for you to try it! Probably going to do this little long regimen once a month to see if it makes a long-term difference. Let me know what your hair thinks!

Sounds awesome! Thanks for sharing!! I can’t wait to try it!! I’ll let you know when I do 🙂

  • Leigh September 26, 2012 at 2:09 pm

Oh this is awesome! How did you come up with it? I will have to try. I also like to pull off the “natural blonde” look 😉

    • missy September 28, 2012 at 3:32 am

Not tested on animals. Tested on a dumb blonde who comes up with cooky ideas. This one WORKED and I’m kind of a smidge excited ’bout it.

  • Michelle September 26, 2012 at 3:53 pm

This sounds amazing! How do you come up with all these ideas?!? Can’t wait to try this!! Thank you!!

    • missy September 28, 2012 at 3:29 am

Hair needed a boost and I played science experiment with my fridge. haha!

  • Elizabeth September 26, 2012 at 4:02 pm

I SWEAR you keep reading my mind! My hair needs a little pick me up.

  • Courtney September 26, 2012 at 4:40 pm

This is great! Where do you get the ideas for this stuff? You’re amazing, I’m going to have to try this soon!

    • missy September 28, 2012 at 3:27 am

Don’t ask because I’m not exactly sure of the answer. My hair needed some attention and so I did an experiment (no pressure but if it worked I figured I share it). And it did! And I’m ecstatic about it! haha!

  • MANDA September 26, 2012 at 6:55 pm

Yay! And double yay! My hair wash day is coming up. I’ve been trying to go longer inbetween washes ever since I read your dirty hair post. I have everything for the smoothie… Now I just have to be patient.

  • Sarah September 26, 2012 at 7:08 pm

I plan to try this after a trip to the grocery store!
I’m currently in search of a good blender–hopefully one that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg–would you recommend one?

    • missy September 28, 2012 at 3:24 am

Blender? Hmm. My husband swears by the Ninja at Bed Bath & Beyond (not too pricey)… but the blades freaked me out and I made him take it back. But supposedly they do the trick? Wear safety gloves. (Do they make those? ha!)

  • Sam @ The Balance Artist September 27, 2012 at 1:29 am

First time commenter here, but as I am sitting with cling wrap plastered to my head, green gunk pooling down over my ears, I am LOVING this idea!! I used a bunch of kale as opposed to spinach, just because it was on the brink of going bad and needed to use it. And still tons of vitamins! Thanks for this!! Love your blog. xo

    • missy September 28, 2012 at 3:22 am

Always good to hear from someone who comes out of the shadows and into the light! Love hearing from readers! Green gunk and clean wrap? Sounds like you might be onto something… haha!

  • Kseniya September 27, 2012 at 6:37 am

I just love your blog! Also a first time commenter. 🙂 This idea is amazing. Will definately have to try it. Love all your posts, and the ones with beauty tips really make it all the more fun.

    • missy September 28, 2012 at 3:21 am

Aww! Thanks! Can’t wait to hear how it turns out for you!

  • Kira H. September 27, 2012 at 8:10 pm

I can’t wait to try this as my hair seems fried right now from the sun this summer. Also, what nail polish are you wearing in this pic?

    • missy September 28, 2012 at 3:20 am

Dude. It’s a $2 polish by e.l.f. at Target. I’m a sucker for marketing and the bottle was gorgeous! It’s a dark purple… can’t remember the color off the top of my head.

  • MANDA September 27, 2012 at 10:04 pm

Missy! I just have to tell you… I did the hair smoothie this morning. I kept getting whifs of fruitiness and discovered it was my hair that smelled so good. It feels good too!

  • Jamie September 28, 2012 at 3:59 am

So after seeing this post and your rave review, there was no way I could NOT try it!! Used the smoothie for the first time tonight and it has made itself a way into my weekly or monthly routine for sure! My hair feels better than it has been since who knows how long!! Thanks so much for spreading the love, lady!

  • Mary-Ann September 29, 2012 at 3:02 am

Hi, do you have a colour on your lips in the pic?

    • missy October 1, 2012 at 2:06 am

It’s called pink nouveau by MAC

  • Ashley September 30, 2012 at 3:16 pm

How often do you do this to your hair? My hair gets so dry in the CO climate… And coloring doesn’t help!!

    • missy October 1, 2012 at 2:04 am

I’ve only tried it once. That being said, I plan to do it once a month. 🙂

  • Solvita October 2, 2012 at 9:09 pm

I will absolutely be trying this. CANNOT WAIT! My hair are screaming for a nice, rich treatment like this.
Thank you for sharing! I really love your blog and enjoy reading your posts 🙂

  • Trista October 2, 2012 at 11:45 pm

I am allergic to strawberries. Do you recommend using something else instead?

    • missy October 3, 2012 at 12:46 am

Raspberries would also work because of their seeds. Or just omit the strawberries altogether. You’ll still enjoy the benefits. 🙂

  • Megan October 4, 2012 at 6:04 pm

Oh my! I loved this! I didn’t have any honey on hand (who am I??) so I used olive oil. My hair is shiney, smooth and thanks to your straightening techniques, full! I love your website!

  • Amy October 8, 2012 at 12:37 am

I just tried this today (stuck to the drying technique as well) and really love it! My hair looks and feels great! I’m going to do this weekly.

  • Kari October 10, 2012 at 9:22 pm

I don’t wanna sound needy or anything, but could you add a pin it button to your posts? That wold be awesome!

  • Kelley October 10, 2012 at 11:22 pm

I just did this and it was AMAZING! My hair is super soft and has a ton of volume- which is a constant struggle for me! This is a monthly habit for me for sure… I just wonder how it will impact my hair after I get it colored next week.

  • Sydney October 31, 2012 at 3:23 am

note to self… definitely use a blender next time!

my roommate and I thought that we could still do it even though we didn’t have a blender.. I’m still picking out chunks of strawberry and avocado!

    • missy October 31, 2012 at 6:43 pm

OOh. No fun. Yes, a blender is a MUST! haha!

  • Amy December 1, 2012 at 10:08 pm

Love this idea! I have an upcoming trip to Australia (their summer) and plan to do this treatment before I go and after I return. Any suggestions for me while I’m there to protect my hair (and color) from the UV rays?

  • Amanda December 12, 2012 at 2:34 am

After suffering medication induced hair shedding since May , I figured what can this hurt to try. I used all the ingredients above except I doubled the batch and used Vanilla Yogurt instead of plain. Left in for 35 min. Had to really rinse, and rinse to get out all the seeds, etc. My hair felt somewhat knotty and icky when brushing but I continued. After blow drying upside down (which by the way only took half the time) I flipped my head up, and you are correct HOLY 80’s!!! It looks like i have so much hair now, considering the hair loss. It feels the best its ever been!! This is by far the best and I feel like I just left the salon!!! Thank you so much for sharing, I will be doing this often!!!!! Best Wishes!

  • Emily December 18, 2012 at 6:40 pm

it won’t dye your hair will it? I have dark brown hair.

    • missy December 18, 2012 at 7:00 pm

no, you’re good to go! 🙂

    • Emily December 18, 2012 at 7:17 pm

      thanks!

  • Delaney January 10, 2013 at 7:12 pm

Hi! Can’t wait to try this! Will it still work if I air dry my hair? I have pretty fine hair… would that just make it flat and stringy looking? Thanks!

    • missy January 18, 2013 at 7:38 pm

I would not recommend letting it air dry. You’ll need to blow dry to get the full effects.

  • Jessica January 12, 2013 at 6:06 pm

My hair looked dry and dull, I followed this and the blowout instructions and I am amazed and how great my hair looks. Thank You!

  • Erica February 4, 2013 at 6:28 am

I stumbled upon your Blog a couple days ago and I have been in seventh Heaven since. Holy moly!! My blonde locks of love are worshiping you and your brilliant hair treatment!! You are a gem, thank you! Xoxo

  • Krista February 12, 2013 at 9:53 pm

I tried this and it was horrible. The spinach made a COMPLETE MESS of my entire bathroom. It got stuck to everything, and I could not get it out of my hair! The tiny flakes of spinach were in my scalp and all through my hair, even shampoo’d twice. The blow dryer got most out, but then it ended up being blown around my washroom.
I would suggest only using the other ingredients, leave the spinach out!!!!

  • Jena March 2, 2013 at 3:40 am

I stumbled across your blog from Pinterest and I love it so far!

Was just curious now that it has been a few months since you first wrote this post if you have stuck to doing this once a month and how you feel about the results now??

I’m looking forward to trying this out!!

  • angel allen March 15, 2013 at 4:47 am

What haircolor do you use?? It’s a beautiful color

  • Priyanjana April 9, 2013 at 6:11 am

    Hii
I used your recipe minus the spinach and the strawberries, coz it’s not available in India right now(strawberries), but the result was wonderful.
I also added a few drops of rum, as my friend recommended with the same recipe, my hair was a lot more manageable after that.

    Thank you
