Remembering home as a little girl, a certain old barn captivated my attention — always wondering what stories it told. Now grown, it’s comforting to see it each time I return — unchanged and just as endearing.
Makes me wonder if my own children are capturing similar experiences that will one day remind them of where they came from.
Almost eight years ago (sheesh), we left Colorado to venture as newlyweds to make a new life together. So much has happened since then …
At what point does a new place turn into the place we call home?
For me, it took five years. You could even say the defining point was when I became a mother. All of a sudden, the littlest of things mattered just a little bit more — like what percent milk was best (you know because fattening whole milk now becomes the goal for growing children).
Home is where you wake to, “Mama, I had a good sleepy” and where songs and eskimo kisses finish day’s end.
A sidewalk lined with chalk ABC’s and 123’s.
The family quilt sewn from the great grandmother you never met — giving warmth to generations of grandchildren.
Home is closets that need purging and floors that need sweeping. Or maybe it’s a complete and utter disaster. But it’s yours.
Backyard picnics or candles just because. A meal that becomes a gathering.
Home is Daddy coming home — it sounds like Christmas morning.
Roll-on-the-floor tickle fights with never-ending pleas for more.
Building forts and make-believe.
Evening walks, holding hands — like a chain of paper dolls.
Home is ours for the making. No matter the place.
Where memories become the most beautiful pictures our mind can paint so that nothing can ever erase them.
Beautiful !
🙂
Beautiful pictures and beautifully written Missy. As a newlywed myself, being only married just about 3 weeks but together 8 1/2 years, my husband and I ( eee I love saying husband) are looking for our home to raise a family in. We live in small condo right now but it has been our home for a long time. My parents only live a few minutes up the road in the house I called home for most my life. I still look at it as home. My father is from Iowa and to me that is “home” too; Where my grandparents, aunts and uncles and cousins live. I guess home is where your heart is and sometimes that’s more than one place. But like you said, I think when you have children that defines “home” a little more.
Loved the line about the great grandmother quilt, we have one too 🙂 Loved this post friend, xo!
Congratulations, you darling girl! Wishing you all the happiness and love of a new “home” your way! xo
Beautiful. ♥

Xo,
Sincerely Miss Ash
Thank you, kindly! xo
Oh my goodness you know Recycled? Love that place. We just moved, and I’m so bummed I can’t pop into her shop anymore. Glad she does online stuff, but her little store was just so fun. You’re not local…how did you find her?
Have the world of Instagram for connecting us. Can’t believe it took me this long to join! haha!
Oh so much to say. As the only child of 6 that left her hometown of Chicago to move to Minneapolis to be w/ her boyfriend, now husband, I SO can relate to your feelings. It’s been 8 years now myself and I cannot agree more. Personally it took me about 5 years and a new house for it to feel like “home”. And then it REALLY settled in when we had our son. To see him run free in the backyard and beg to ride his bike down the street to the park…to building forts on Saturday mornings just b/c we can….to sitting on the countertops helping me make muffins…..to the “when is Daddy getting home?”, those are HOME to me. We get back to Chicago at least 5/6 times a year and oh how i miss it….it will always have a huge place in my heart. But each and every time, when we leave and our driving back through Wisconsin my boys and I have our giddy “we can’t wait to get home” cheer. 🙂 And that to me, is home.
I can completely relate to all of this… oh how life changes and brings new joys intermixed with the old.
Home right now is Dubai, my children call Dubai home, they were born here but my “real childhood home” will always be in South Africa with my family!
Stunning post – LOVE the barn!!!
Love your blog – it always makes me smile xxx
Oh Dubai?! No way! I would LOVE to visit, one day. So fascinated by everyone’s path in life.
What a sweet post. Home is where the heart is, that’s for sure. 🙂 I love your style, too, girl! You’re rockin’ it!
xo
thanks for this beautiful post. I needed this today! Ever since becoming a mom it’s been so hard balancing it all and keeping a “perfectly” organized home. In the end, all that matters is being together with your kids and your family and enjoying the days that fly right past. thanks!
Amen, sister!
love this!
I love old barns! Love this! It helps me appreciate my home even more here in North Georgia!
