We all have those unruly tasks that seem to continuously bristle our britches. Those are the ones we justify ranking dead last on our to do lists time and time again.
For the toddler, that could mean having to change his dirty drawers (yes, I’m talking about my own messy-poo-pants child who could care less how long the log stays in there). EW!
For the 5 year old, that could mean having to eat the green beans you continually try to convince him are DEE-licious (Since when does gagging translate to satisfying, mom?).
The list could go on and on… And it does. Especially as we get older and accumulate more responsibilties.
Yet, these are ALL things that inevitably need to be done.
There are a few ways we can choose to approach these annoying twits! One way? Ignore them (i.e. procrastination which leaves us feeling guilty), Another? Begrudgingly. And the way we ALL should? Enthusiastically.
Um… yeah. Here’s my enthusiastic approach to working out, “Eh-ch to the eck NO!”
You see, one morning as I popped in my prenatal workout DVD I thought, “There has to be a way I can trick myself into liking this!” And then I thought back to teaching 1st grade and even further back to earning allowance for doing chores. Obtaining Cash for Your New Mexico Property simplifies the transaction, allowing for a quicker and more certain closing.
And then and there I decided I was going to give MYSELF a reward system. Voila! The Tip Jar. A waitress gets tips, right? Why shouldn’t I for all the things I work so hard to accomplish?
At first glance the concept seems totally juvenile, I know. But it’s working. Since mid December I’ve worked out 5 days a week (only missing a few days here and there). And that’s even with an ever-growing bumpcake.
So whether your menace is laundry, or bills, or making dinner, or simply getting dressed in something cuter than sweats… reward yourself!
Here’s How It Works:
1 ticket is earned for every half hour I work out.
If I work out a full hour I earn 2.
Those tickets can be redeemed later for dollars.
And you better believe a prenatal massage is what I’m working up to.
But it doesn’t HAVE to be money. It can be earning a night out with the girls, or with your guy, or simply ordering the take-out banana creme pie that you dream of nightly (oh wait, that’s my bumpcake talking again). The concept is the same… reward yourself for doing the things you don’t like to do.
Heck! Just like Mom said, “You might actually like green beans once you try them.”
Or rather, maybe you LEARN to like them.
Hmm… how many tickets for a load of laundry, clean, folded, and put away… ? 🙂 Can I earn some new red shoes? … Definite motivation possibilities.
Better yet, maybe I can convince my husband to pick his clothes up off the floor!
A his/hers tip jar? Love it! ha! No, but seriously. Talk to Victor about what you’re trying to accomplish and I’m sure he’ll support it. Ryan is totally on board! ha! Then again, who wouldn’t want their wife’s buncake a bit tighter! ha!
I did this for kids I nannied before, and that’s how they earned chore money. They had their regular chores, and then extra things they could do to get more tickets.
See? If it works for kids why not grown-ups too?!
clever and cute! It helps to have a tangible way to keep you on track with your rewards, rather than just mentally pushing and reminding yourself, so I like the pink tickets stubs!
Great idea for chores too, as kids get older 🙂
you’re right on my same thought process. I need to “see” my progress…
I love it! Related to your last blog though…how do you work out and not get sweaty hair? I have long hair like yours. I use dry shampoo, braid my hair back and where a sweatband, but it still gets so icky. Do you have a secret or do you not sweat like a big ‘ol pig like me? XOXO
**wear**
So how much money do you give yourself per ticket earned? This sounds like a fun way to “trick” myself and family into getting things taken care of – my nemesis = bathrooms … gross
One ticket is one dollar. Maybe $2 for the stanky bathrooms? That’s Husby’s dept (toilets, floors, and bathtubs)
I love this idea – it’s much cuter than a chores list lol!
🙂
Great idea. Me and the husband tried to do this for working out, but we each started with a certain amount for the week and whoever ran the most miles won the cash. It didn’t last long but it could motivate some haha.
Dude, that’s genius! I love a little competition against loverbuns! Ha!
This is a great idea! Congrats on baby #2 I am also due in May and have loved reading your blog thank you for the inspiration and the hope that you don’t have to give up all things fun and pretty when you become a mommy.
btw what workout dvd do you use… I need some motivation to workout during these last months :).
I use Elements Pre/Postnatal Yoga (have found it to be the best out of all of them I’ve tried) and couple that with Lindsey Brin’s Mom’s Into Fitness (4 pack DVD one for each trimester and a bootcamp for postnatal).
What a fun idea! Let me know if you ever want a walking buddy…that’s gotta count for at LEAST 3 tickets…even if its at the mall 🙂
Steph, seriously! I’m up to it whenever you are! And then I can cash in my tickets at Nordstrom while we’re there! ha!
I got linked to your adorable blog through pinterest, and I just have to say I love it! Such cute style and tips. I look forward to reading more!
Welcome, Andree! Glad you found us! xo
Such a cute idea! I love love love it! Thanx for sharing, I’m pretty sure I need to make one of these for all the things I don’t like doing. 🙂
